Nowadays, it is recognised that 6S management techniques enhance productivity and competitiveness. Many manufacturing facilities have opted to follow the path towards a “6S” workplace organisational and housekeeping methodology as part of continuous improvement or lean manufacturing processes. This lean method encourages workers to improve their working conditions and helps them to learn to reduce waste, unplanned downtime, and in-process inventory.
In line with the adoption of the 6S concept, Tropic Knits Group launched a 6S logo competition across its business units in Mauritius, Madagascar and India. The winning logo came from one grassroot employee from Tropic Madagascar, who was rewarded Rs 3,000.
During the first week of April, a number of events were organised at Tropic Madagascar, Tropic Mauritius and CDL Knits to launch the official 6S logo for Tropic Knits Group and also to launch a 6S Digital Manual.
What is 6S?
6S is a basic tool and the first step in Lean Manufacturing, which is a Japanese concept for organising a standard workplace and work to reduce waste (in terms of searching time, materials, non value-added activities) to provide a safe working environment and to achieve Operational Excellence.
In 6S - Each 'S' will be as follows:
1S-Sort: Distinguish between what is needed and not needed and to remove the latter.
2S-Set In order: Organise the remaining needed items.
3S-Shine: Clean up the workplace and look for ways to keep it clean.
4S-Standardise: Maintain and monitor adherence to the 6S.
5S-Sustain: Follow the rules to keep the workplace 6S-right - "maintain the gain".
6S-Safety: Eliminate hazards.
