Agro-Industry, in partnership with the Group Quartier
Français from Reunion Island, took in 2000 a
majority stake and the management of TPC Ltd,
one of four sugar companies of Tanzania, in Arusha region, at
the foot of the Kilimanjaro.
TPC is situated on an agricultural estate of 15,800 hectares,
out of which 7,700 hectares is under cane cultivation. Since
privatization, the Company has invested USD 35m devoted to the
rehabilitation of fields, infrastructures and equipments. As
a result, sugar production increased steadily from around 30
000 tonnes, at acquisition, to reach 62,000 tonnes in 2004/2005.
This production is mainly intended for the local market and
generates a turnover of USD 25m.
Presently, TPC has about 2,200 permanent employees and 900 seasonal
and temporary employees for the duration of the harvest. In
addition, TPC provides substantial indirect employment through
the hiring of various outside contractors present on the estate.
To ensure the competitiveness of its operations, in an increasingly
liberalized world sugar market, TPC decided, in 2004, to embark
on a significant investment programme in order to increase production
beyond its present capacity.
In that context, a capital investment of USD 25m will bring the factory crushing capacity from the present 125 tonnes of cane per hour to 160 tonnes
per hour, corresponding to a sugar production capacity of 85,000 tonnes. The operations will be self-sufficient in electricity during harvest season,
with an excess of 35GWh which will be exported to the national grid.
In the fields, a capital investment of USD 7,5m for the development and irrigation of 1,100 hectares will provide an additional 140,000 tonnes sugar
cane for the factory.
With the operations in Tanzania being rehabilitated and the expansion project well under way, the Group is on the move to identify other regional
opportunities in the sugar industry and related sectors, to further consolidate its position as an important player in the region whilst at the same time
diversifying its production base. |
